The Great Desk-Bar Conversion

May 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment

So I wanted to publish my plans earlier today but ran into some difficulty with the scanner… so I’m writing this quick note at 0127 after a very long but satisfying day.  The project is to convert the built in desk surface in the dining room of our new condo into a dry bar.  The plans were pretty bold considering how little of it I had done before but with alot of help from Ryan and some perseverence we are right on track.  Here is a summary of what we did;

  • 2.5 hour home depot run, actually a 2 hr followed by a 30 min run after I realized I’d forgotten a key item
  • Removed desk surface (counter top) without damaging said surface
  • Broke out existing electrical outlet, added new wire to extend to 2 new outlet boxes, one double switch controlling two hardwired lighting devices. – wiring is incomplete at this point but the path forward is clear.
  • Installed 42″x48″ mirror on 1″x2″x44″ firring strips
  • Re-installed counter top at 36″ height
  • Placed new cabinet with drawer under counter top – not yet tacked into the walls
  • Installed 2 overhead xenon lights, removed later in process due to both of them swinging down and smacking me in the head…
  • Built overhead 6″ high plywood box – that covers unfinished top of mirror and sprinkler head. It will also be the mounting place for the hanging stemware racks
  • Built skeleton of a 2 step alcohol shelf for the counter top. The shelf stretches the full 48″ and is 11″ deep giving it one 7″ and one 4″ shelf.  It will be lit from the inside and have ’step-tops’ made from clear Plexiglas to shine upwards.
  • Collapsed in exhaustion.

So it was a productive and tiring day, I can’t wait be done with the project and announce the ‘STOCKING THE BAR’ party that will certainly follow. Stay tuned for some pictures and more updates.  Thanks again to all the help from Ryan!
